Important Information

  • Sierra Negra has the largest caldera of all the Galapagos volcanoes, and is one of the largest volcanic craters on the planet. Its circumference measures an enormous 30km (19 miles), a fact that can be appreciated in its entirety from the Sierra Negra Volcano viewpoint. It is impossible not to be impressed by the magnitude of the caldera. It is fair to say that the Sierra Negra volcano rarely sleeps. Its most recent eruption was in the summer of 2018, and before that in 2005. However, this is good news for tourists, as there are plenty of young lava flows (both A'a and Pahoehoe) to see and usually small steaming fumaroles as well.
