Leave Quito and head northwest, entering the cloud forest to reach the Andean Chocó, a UNESCO-declared World Biosphere Reserve located on the western slopes of Pichincha Volcano. Surrounded by lush cloud forests, majestic waterfalls, and exceptional biodiversity, this area is truly unique. Stop in Nono town, a great place to have breakfast (if you didn't have it). After breakfast, begin your adventure. Descend by bike along a gravel road through the Andean Chocó. Cross several climatic zones and admire unique birds and species. While crossing the cloud forest, light drizzle is possible, typical of the area, but the weather remains pleasantly mild, getting a little wet in moderate rain is part of the experience. After the bike descent and lunch, head to the town of Mindo. Nestled in the foothills of the Western Andes, Mindo is a paradise of flora and fauna. Its altitude (1250 m/4100 ft) creates a unique climate. Choose one optional activity: visit the Colorful Bird and Hummingbird Reserve, take a Chocolate Tour, Coffee Tour, or visit the Butterfly garden to observe the life cycle of butterflies—eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and adult flyers.
