Description

Discover the highlights of Quito on a guided tour. Visit the Basilica del Voto Nacional, Plaza Grande, and the Church of San Francisco. Stop at the Middle of the World to learn about the equatorial line and the Coriolis effect. Begin the tour with a pick-up from your hotel and head to the Basilica del Voto Nacional. Climb its towers to enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Admire the Pichincha volcano and, if the weather is favorable, see the Cotopaxi, Antisana, and Cayambe volcanoes. Continue to the Plaza Grande or Plaza de la Independencia. Take a walking tour to appreciate the different important buildings and facades of religious constructions. Visit the Government Palace, the Monument to Independence, the Primate Cathedral of Quito, the church 'El Sagrario,' and the 'Compañía de Jesús' church. Continue to the Plaza and Church of San Francisco. Visit the church to see the image of the Virgin of Quito, the only image with wings, created by the indigenous artist Bernardo de Legarda. Take a break to visit a chocolate shop in the Yumbos sector. Taste different flavors and intensities of cocoa, and then take the transport to continue to “La Loma del Panecillo”. On this hill is the largest religious statue in Ecuador, the Virgin of Quito, 41 m. high at 3,100 m. (10,170 ft.) above sea level. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious Ecuadorian lunch. Continue towards the Middle of the World, where you have one of the most important museums in Ecuador, “Intiñan”, exact point latitude 0”0’0’0, a place used by indigenous peoples. In this place, see a variety of solar instruments and have a clear idea of how the equatorial line was discovered. Have some demonstrations regarding the Coriolis effect, as well as how to balance an egg on a nail, etc. In the same place, observe representative houses of the Andean and Amazonian area, which are part of the local culture. Finally, return to the hotel.
