Description

Begin your journey from the North of Quito, at the base of the Rucu Pichincha volcano, where “Rucu” means “old” in the ancient Quechua language. This extinct giant rises almost 4,784 meters into the sky and offers panoramic views stretching from the Carita de Dios to the endless mountain ranges of the Andes. A few minutes after departure, the road connects with the Casitagua volcano. The air up here is thin, crisp, and pure. River crossings are common on this route, so the weather has a great impact on finishing it. Then begins the descent and the transformation. With each kilometer, the landscape changes in texture, temperature, and tone. The cold winds fade, replaced by warm, humid air that smells of orchids and rain. Suddenly, find yourself surrounded by the emerald embrace of Mindo, with its 133 endemic species flying at hand's reach. Here, life abounds: waterfalls cascade from hidden cliffs, the air vibrates with the song of hundreds of bird species, and butterflies dance like fragments of light in the mist. The journey that began among volcanoes ends in a paradise of sounds, colors, and life. The Rucu Pichincha-Mindo route is more than an off-road trail; it is a journey through the vertical stories of the Earth, from the roof of the world to the beating heart of the forest, a living reminder of Ecuador's wild and breathtaking diversity.
