Quito Finalist of the New 7 Wonder Cities Contest

If we want to save anything, we first need to truly appreciate it.

From among 1200 nominated cities, Quito-Ecuador is one of the 28 finalists in the world competition "New 7 Wonder Cities". This event is organized by the Swiss Foundation New7Wonders, promoter of the past contests "7 Wonders of the World" and "7 Wonders of Nature".

The mission of the foundation is to raise awareness around the globe on our legacy to future generations. As Bernard Weber, its founder, said, "If we want to save anything, we first need to truly appreciate it".

The contest kicked off in January 2012 and is now in its fourth and final phase, which will culminate on the 7th December 2014 when the seven winning cities will be announced. The selection is based on the general public’s vote plus the recommendations of a panel of seven experts headed by Federico Mayor, former Director of UNESCO, and made up of renowned professionals in the fields of architecture and urban planning, communication, sociology, and economics.

The most important selection criteria considered are that the cities have: “current strengths and/or potential for sustainable growth, in terms of cultural, environmental, economic and tourism potential; a historical legacy and/or potential for growing and sustaining a historical legacy in the future; a city strategy aiming for a balance of infrastructure, living, working and recreation spaces.”
