Description
Begin your adventure with a drive to Cotopaxi National Park. Upon entering, meet your certified park guide, who will accompany you throughout the day, explaining the geology, flora, and fauna of the area.
Make your first stop at the Limpiopungo Lagoon, a beautiful body of water situated at 3,800 meters above sea level. Take a gentle walk around the lagoon, an ideal spot for photography where, weather permitting, Cotopaxi is perfectly reflected in the water. Observe Andean birds such as the Andean gull and wild ducks, and, with luck, the wild horses of the páramo.
Next, transfer by vehicle to the high parking lot (at 4,600 m). From this point, challenge the altitude on a 45- to 60-minute ascent hike to the José Ribas Refuge, located at 4,860 meters. Enjoy a well-deserved rest, an optional hot chocolate, and a spectacular view of the glacier and surrounding valleys.
Leave Cotopaxi behind and head into the rugged landscapes of the Cotopaxi province, passing through local indigenous communities until you reach the community of Quilotoa. Arrive at the viewpoint of the Quilotoa Lagoon, an impressive volcanic caldera 3 kilometers in diameter. Its bright emerald green waters change hue depending on the sunlight.
Take time to photograph the crater from its best angles and, depending on the time available and your energy, descend to the shore of the lagoon or walk along the viewpoint trails to admire the vastness of the Andean landscape.
