Mindo–Nambillo Ecological Reserve covers approximately 22,000 hectares of primary forest, featuring a natural complex of 15 waterfalls varying in height and character. Located at 1,900 meters (6,233 ft) above sea level, the reserve is home to hummingbirds, air plants, orchids, and other exotic wildlife.
Your tour begins with an 8:00 a.m. hotel pickup in Quito. After traveling a winding road, visit a hummingbird farm where you can observe and photograph these vibrant birds before enjoying a coffee break at a local plantation.
Next, explore Mindo village, situated at the southern edge of the Chocó-Andean biodiversity hotspot. Recognized by Birdlife International in 1997 as South America's first internationally important bird area, Mindo offers a rich variety of avian species. From here, board a 530-meter cable car that crosses the rainforest canopy to access scenic mountain views.
Following the cable car ride, take a guided hike of about one hour—adjusted to your physical ability—to visit waterfalls including Ondinas, Guarumos, Colibríes, Madre, and Los Maderos. You can take a refreshing dip in any of these natural pools. Your guide will explain the cloud forest vegetation, birdlife, and unique adaptations to this environment.
Time for lunch is available at your discretion. The day continues with a chocolate tasting tour, offering an educational experience of local chocolate production. If time permits, visit an orchid and butterfly farm before returning to your Quito hotel around 5:30 p.m.
