Museo del Tren
Ecuador
This free museum tells you everything you need to know about the history of trains and railroads in Ecuador, and is really good fun for all the family.
One of the more charming quirks is the prevalence of rotating objects behind glass containers; this allows you to observe each artefact in all its fascinating glory. There are also a number of gadgets and tools that produce the same physical aspects as those used in the actual construction of railways. And let's not forget the media room, which comes with cushions for your comfort.
This is a museum which seeks to teach. It recreates the history of railroads in Ecuador, and also associated stories, myths and experiences. It is, in many ways, as iconic as the railroads themselves. You will learn all about the difficulties of building railroads in Ecuador. You will also see scale models of the railways between Quito and Duran, plus be able to view all the elements required to create a railway.
Not only does the museum detail the physical difficulties of creating Ecuador's railroads, but also the geographical, political and economic obstacles that were in place. Indeed, the country's railway system was - and is - commonly referred to as 'the hardest railroad in the world'.
