Description
Day 1: Otavalo
Depart Quito and head to Otavalo, stopping at Miralago for views and photos of Imbabura Volcano and San Pablo Lake. Sample traditional bizcochos served with dulce de leche and local cheese while learning about Otavalo culture from your guide.
Visit Laguna de San Pablo at the foot of Imbabura Volcano, a sacred lake offering scenic photo opportunities. Follow the Ancient Weavers’ Route, touring Kichwa Otavalo homes and workshops to observe the traditional weaving process of ponchos, scarves, and tapestries.
Explore the largest indigenous handicraft market in South America, viewing textiles crafted with ancestral techniques. On Saturdays, experience the local market’s vibrant trade and culture.
Walk a forest trail to an 18-meter waterfall regarded as sacred by local communities. After the hike, transfer by private vehicle to a hotel in Mindo for rest and preparation for day two.
Day 2: Mindo
Start your day immersed in nature with bird sounds and forest views. Take the Tarabita cable car for aerial views of the forest canopy. Visit the Sanctuary of Waterfalls, hiking trails that lead to seven cascades suitable for cooling off.
Stop at a butterfly garden to walk among hundreds of butterflies and learn about metamorphosis. Visit a local chocolate factory for a guided tour and tasting of authentic chocolate products.
At San Tadeo Birding (or Alambi), stroll natural trails to observe and hand-feed hummingbirds and spot other exotic cloud forest species.
Return to Quito with your guide for drop-off at centrally located hotels.
