Description
Quito, located at 2800 meters above sea level, was founded in the 16th century on the ruins of an Inca city. Despite a major earthquake in 1917, its historical center remains one of the best-preserved in Latin America.
The city’s architecture and interiors showcase the Art School of Quito, blending Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish, and Indigenous influences. Artists skilled in stone and wood depicted significant religious events throughout the city’s churches and monuments.
The walking portion of the tour lasts about 1.5 hours in the Old Town, during which you'll learn about Quito’s colonial art, architecture, culture, legends, and traditions. Quito was the first city designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Quito derives its name from the Kitus tribe, original inhabitants before Spanish conquest. Founded as San Francisco de Quito, the city was initially the capital of the Inca Empire and later a Spanish colonial capital.
The Franciscan order established the Church of San Francisco monastery early on, which became a cultural and educational center renowned for its painting and sculpture schools.
At Plaza Grande, visit key national buildings including the Cathedral, Presidential Palace, Archbishop’s Palace, and City Hall. The tour features the Jesuit temple, notable for its intricately carved façade.
For a contrast to the old city, the tour visits Panecillo Hill, where you can view the entire metropolis and its Virgin Mary statue, the city’s patroness.
