Amaru Zoológico Cuenca
Ecuador
If you visit just one zoo during your time in Ecuador, make sure it's this one. It is positively stuffed with animals from all over the world, many of them wonderfully exotic.
There is a dazzling mixture of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and birds, and you can learn everything there is to know about their biology, roles in the culture of wherever they've come from and their conservation status.
Some of the highlights of this zoo are the Andean Bear Sanctuary, the Crocodile Swamp, the African Mountain Lions, the Monkey and Macaw Forest and the section with orchids. In total the zoo houses over 50 species of animals.
Once you've checked out all the exotic animals, you can go on a pleasant stroll. Due to it being located on the side of a mountain, the zoo has a number of natural trails - some more difficult than others - with flat sections, descents and ascents. The terrain is a mixture of rock, wood and earth, so it is advisable to wear sensible footwear.
Unfortunately, at the time of writing, due to the natural topography these trails are not accessible for people in wheelchairs or parents with prams and the like. This is something the zoo is hoping to develop in the near future. Families will however enjoy the food court and souvenir shop.
Prices:- $4 for adults, $3 for elderly or disabled, and $3.50 for concessions.
Opening Times:
