Mindalae Museum
Ecuador
This fascinating museum gives a great insight into the traditional culture of the Ecuadorian people. It is spread throughout six rooms, each with a unique theme: Shamanism, Andean Worldview, Clothing, Ceramics, Natural Fibres and Amazon Worlds. The ethos and general aim of the museum is to create a space where people from all different walks of life can get together and exchange ideas and views.
The building has an opening which has been called 'The Eye of the Sun'. It is through this opening that for the both the summer and winter solstices (June 21st and December 21st), and the equinoxes (March 20th and September 22nd), a column of light shines through each of the five floors, all the way to the bottom. These dates were key events for the ancient people of Ecuador.
You will see displays which showcase the clothes of the indigenous people of Ecuador and also their manufacturing techniques. Objects of interest include ceramics, pots, models of animals and mythical characters from indigenous legends. You can also see more everyday objects, such as hammocks, jewellery and baskets.
The museum charges a small entrance fee of $3 for adults and $1.50 for children, and there's a great little café on the first floor.
