This is one of the most important museums in Quito. Several comprehensive and well thought-out displays which detail life in the city from pre-colonization to the 1800s integrate its permanent exhibitions. There are always temporary exhibitions, too.
The building itself, with over 400 years of existence, is a point of interest. If you are unfamiliar with Quito and its history, this museum will act as a great introduction. Spread over two floors, you will find interactive displays, models, and memorabilia, from pots and pans to old horse-drawn carriages. You can also go all the way up to the bell tower of the church to appreciate a great view of the city.
Entry to the museum ranges from $1 to $3 for adults, and for an additional $4 you can have a guided tour in either English, French, German, or Italian (and Spanish, of course).
There is a decently-priced café for refreshments, which is open to the general public as well as visitors to the museum.
