Directions to Museo Nacional del Ministerio de Cultura
This museum aims to safeguard the cultural heritage of the country. It was managed by the Central Bank of Ecuador for many years, during which this institution took over the task of restoring and preserving the collections that are part of this heritage as well as of the education in this area so that the work could be continued.
Its colonial art collection has a beautiful selection where the characteristic predominance of religious themes with European influence and the syncretism with the indigenous culture are revealed.
The archaeology collection boasts stone, ceramic, metal, wood and shell objects dating back to 15.000 BC until the Inca era (1533 AC). Pieces as iconic and peculiar as the venuses of Valdivia and Chorrera "whistle bottles", among many others, can be admired here. The impressive "Sala de Oro" ("Gold Hall") exhibits body ornaments made of gold from the Inca culture, among which is an outstanding collection of ceremonial masks.
The National Museum is home to a remarkable selection representing the history of the country and constituting an extraordinary cultural heritage.
In addition to its permanent collections, the National Museum also has other interesting temporary exhibitions, usually around the theme of the cultural history of the country.
If you want to know more about Ecuador and its history, you can purchase cultural publications and other products at the museum store. (The store is closed at lunch time, from 1 to 2 pm).
Admission is free.
