Café Mosaico
Ecuador
This restaurant is special for a number of reasons - the most obvious being its spectacular views. Perched above the Old Town in Itchimbía, Café Mosaico enjoys a panoramic vista over the quaint buildings of Quito.
As popular with locals as it is with international tourists, Café Mosaico is Mediterranean-inspired, with warm and rustic décor creating a friendly and inviting atmosphere. The restaurant takes the form of an old colonial house, which adds a lovely splash of history and heritage to the dining experience. The tables are laid out beautifully and decorated with colourful mosaics.
The cuisine here is a beguiling mixture of Greek, traditional Ecuadorian and American, just like the family who run the place, and some of the house favourites include moussaka, meaty hamburgers, grilled meats, pancakes, Belgian waffles and cheesecake. The sandwiches are also worth writing home about (particularly the turkey club), and you'll struggle to find a better vegetarian lasagne not just in Ecuador, but the whole of Latin America.
Even if you don't fancy a whole meal, the snacks will make a visit worthwhile, as will the impressive cocktails. There is also free WiFi and even a telescope for some star gazing when night falls.
Be aware that reservations are not accepted, and due to the popularity of the restaurant, you may have to wait a little while for a table. Your best bet is to arrive early afternoon on a week day.
