Café Cultural Tianguez
Ecuador
This is one of the best Ecuadorian restaurants in Ecuador and serves quite outstanding cuisine. The atmosphere is enchantingly historical, as the restaurant is housed in a very old church in the heart of the Old Town of Quito.
The interior is, unsurprisingly, mesmerisingly atmospheric, with old stone arches towering above. There is also a lovely outdoor seating area, where you can enjoy an unrivalled view of the exterior of the building, the cobbled plaza and the domes of the Compania de Jesus Church and other medieval constructions. The plaza was actually used as a market trading space at one time for tribes from all over Ecuador, and continuing operating for many centuries.
This location of this establishment is also something of a cultural mecca, as the restaurant is connected to a tiny gift shop cum museum in a cave-like structure underneath the church, which is a fascinating place to visit before or after your meal.
Aside from the spectacular food, the coffee and tropical fruit juices also deserve a special mention - they are sublime and should definitely be tried, even if you share one with a friend. At night, the restaurant's charming atmosphere is further enhanced when live Latin American music is performed by local artists.
